Chapter Six Homework

There are two versions of the textbook: the brief version and the regular version. The brief version says brief in the upper left corner of the cover and the regular version does not. The syllabus was designed for the brief version.

The two versions of the book are the same until chapter 6. Section 6.6 in the brief version of the book corresponds with sections 9.1 and 9.2 in the regular version. We will cover only the method of integration by substitution appearing in these sections. That is, the first part of section 6.6 in the brief version corresponding to section 9.1 in the regular version.

The homework assigned for chapter 6 corresponds to the review problems appearing in the brief version of the book. If you have the regular version of the book, the problems are different. You must turn in the problems from the brief version of the book. These problems due December 12 are listed here for reference.

Calculate the following integrals.

3. $$\int {x^2-1\over (x^3-3x+2)^2}dx$$

7. $$\int (e^x+4)^3e^x dx$$

11. $$\int {x^2-1\over x^3-3x+2} dx$$

17. $$\int_1^4 {1\over x^2} dx$$

19. $$\int_{-1}^1 x^4 e^{x^5-1} dx$$

20. $$\int_0^5 (5+3x)^{-1} dx$$

22. $$\int_2^3 {x-1\over (x^2-2x+1)^2} dx$$

23. Find the area under the curve $y=1+\sqrt x$ from $x=1$ to $x=9$.

23. Find the area of the region bounded by the curves $y=16-x^2$ and $y=10-x$.
